Although Neighbors Helping Neighbors is bringing new energy to Wascott, other local organizations continue to provide a helping hand.
The Wascott Tourism and Development Association collected about 390 pounds of food and $650 in donations for the Gordon/Wascott Food Shelf this November. Boxes for food and donation jars were placed in local businesses.
The Wascott Community Club and Fire Department Auxiliary regularly provide scholarships for local students and rally around families when a loved one is lost. In October, the group spent a morning sewing 30 fleece hats, mittens and scarves to donate to children at the Northwood School. The group also donated more than $50 in items to the children’s Christmas bazaar at Northwood School, which gives students a chance to purchase gifts for their famlies.
The Wascott Four Seasons Recreation Club sponsors an annual snowmobile safety classes for youth. In 2009, 22 young riders passed the class. The group also offers a fall turkey hunt for youth.
All three organizations, along with the Wascott Fire Department, Gordon/Wascott EMS and Town of Wascott, team together to provide a Christmas party for children in the Wascott area. Children visit with Santa and receive gifts and treats. Usually, about 125 children attend. This year, the turn-out was a bit smaller, only 95 youth attended. Each of the groups donates time, money and support to give these children a merry Christmas.
Now, the Neighbors Helping Neighbors group is tackling other ideas, looking for new ways to help the community.
