Time is running out if you’re considering a bid for local office.

Would-be candidates have until 5 p.m. Tuesday to get their declarations and nomination petitions in if they’re planning a run for the Superior school board, city council and Douglas County Board.

Two members of the Douglas County Board – Mike Coyle in the 11th District and Bob Browne in the 2nd District, have filed paperwork to declare they won’t be running for office this spring, said Douglas County Clerk Sue Sandvick.

Candidates are vying for a spot on the ballot in all 28 of the county board districts.

Superior’s City Council races are starting to stack up with challengers as the five councilors serving in odd-numbered districts face the end of their term in April. City Clerk Terri Kalan said councilors serving in the 3rd, 5th and 9th districts could be facing challenges so far.

Councilor Warren Bender in the 3rd and Mick McKenzie in the 9th are facing familiar rivalries as former councilors Kevin Norbie in the 3rd and Dennis Dalbec in the 9th hope to retake the seats on the council. Councilor Ed Anderson is also facing a challenge for the first time since he was appointed to the 5th District seat in 2001, when he replaced former Councilor John Stenz after Stenz resigned a year into his term.

Two seats are also opening up in April on the Superior School Board. For more information on how to run for the school board, call (715) 394-8710.

The primary election, if needed, is Feb. 16. The general election is April 6.
