Freshmen lead 'Jackets past Cobbers
UWS gets five goals from first-year players
It turned out to be souvenir puck night Friday night at Wessman Arena.
The event wasn’t planned but became necessary as four different freshmen took home pucks after scoring their first collegiate goals in the University of Wisconsin-Superior’s 7-2 win over the Concordia-Moorhead Cobbers.
Thomas Erlacher led the freshmen scoring sprees with a pair of goals and an assist as the Yellowjackets improved to 1-2 on the season with the non-conference victory.
Also notching their first collegiate goals were Justin Faryna, Kyle Clement and Derek Stauber.
Also getting into the scoring column for UWS were Braden Desmet and Tom Budziakowski.
Desmet also dished out three assists while linemate Josh Kesler had two assists for UWS, which opened the season last weekend with a pair of losses to UW-River Falls.
The Yellowjackets got off to the start they wanted this time around by scoring a pair of goals in the first 2:33 of the game.
Erlacher scored Superior’s first goal at 1:32 when he picked up a loose puck near the crease and put a one-timer over Cobber goaltender Ole Brondbo. Kesler and Desmet assisted.
Just 1:01 later it was 2-0 as Faryna took a pass from Brian Bina, led a 2-on-1 break and put a shot into the top right corner from the left circle.
With 11:57 left in the first period Erlacher was at it again as he took a behind-the-net pass and beat Brondbo. Kesler and Desmet assisted on the Brunico, Italy native.
Desmet gave UWS a 4-0 lead 43 seconds into the second period with a goal assisted by defensemen Art Clark and Stauber.
It went to 5-0 five minutes later when Budziakowski flipped home the rebound after shots by Matt Wiest and Faryna. After thegoal Concordia replaced Brondbo with Mike Persson.
Concordia got on the board with Nick Thielen’s power-play goal at 11:08 of the second period. After taking a pass from Pat Deitz, Thielen skated into the slot from the left corner and put a shot into the net off the leg of UWS goaltender Jim Patterson.
Mark Johnson stuffed home his own rebound 1:12 into the third period to bring the Cobbers within 5-2.
The ’Jackets got the goal back at 9:10 when Jesse Junkermeier centered a pass to Clement, who ripped a shot past Persson.
