UPDATED: Spartan swimmers win LSC title

The Superior High School girls swimming and diving team won 8-of-12 events on its way to winning the Lake Superior Conference swim championships Saturday at the SHS pool.

The Spartans finished about 38 points ahead of second place Proctor-Hermantown.

Karen VanOvermeiren led the Spartans with crowns in the 200 individual medley and 100 butterfly. Kelsey Hansen was first in the 100 freestyle while Anna Anklam bested the field in the 100 breaststroke. Kayla Bedard also dove to a first-place finish off the 1-meter board.

Superior swept all three relay events. Faydra Lagro, Anklam, VanOvermeiren and Hansen swam season best times while winning the 200 medley relay.

Anklam, Tori Johnson, Emily Aller and Hansen finished first in the 200 freestyle relay and Johnson, Aller, Lagro and VanOvermeiren won the 400 freestyle relay.

Senior Faydra Lagro (butterfly) along with freshmen Tori Johnson (freestyle, backstroke) and Morgan Peterson (diving) took key silver medals for the Spartans.

This year the LSC title was determined by a combination of dual meet records and placings at the LSC championship meet. SHS was undefeated in conference dual meets and took first Saturday to win the overall title.

The Spartans next compete in the WIAA Division 1 Hudson Sectional at the Hudson Middle School. Diving is at 5 p.m. on Friday while swimming begins at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
