Spartans pick up LSC honors; swimmers near LSC title

Spartan Roundup

Seven Superior Spartans were named to the 2009 Lake Superior Conference Cross Country All-Conference team.

Leah Holmes, Natalie Kintop and Shane Holmes were named first-team all-conference while Evan Walpole, Mike Chevalier, Andy Heytens and Catie Albrecht were named second team.

Leah and Shane Holmes will run in the WIAA State Cross Country Meet Saturday in Wisconsin Rapids.

Girls swimming

The Spartan girls swimming and diving team finished fifth in last Tuesday’s Duluth East Greyhound Invitational, which was held at the Morgan Park Pool.

Prior Lake, Minn., finished first with 476.5 points.

The Spartans finished with 272 points.

Superior’s Karen VanOvermeiren finished first in the 50 freestyle race.

On Thursday night at Proctor, the Spartans all but wrapped up the Lake Superior Conference title with a 55-39 win over the Rails.

VanOvermeiren was a double winner for Superior, finishing first in the 100 butterfly and 160 IM, as the Spartans won 8-of-11 events.

The Spartans, who were at Grand Rapids Tuesday night, host the Lake Superior Championships at 10 a.m. Saturday in the SHS Natatorium.

Superior’s Christa Diedrich and Allyson Keute were named to the 2009 LSC all-conference volleyball team.

Diedrich, a senior, was named to the first team, while Keute, a sophomore, was an honorable mention selection.
