Halloween thrills

Haunted Ship: Zombies and ghouls lurk in the William A. Irvin this month. Haunted ship tours take place Oct. 22-24 and Oct. 28-31. Times are 6:30-10:30 p.m. Oct. 22-23, 6:30-10 p.m. Oct. 28-30 and 3-11 p.m. Oct. 24 and 31. Cost $8 for ages 13 and up, $6 for children age 12 and under. Bring a canned good for 50 cents off.

Phantom at the O-Poe-ra – A Musical Salute to Poe: An original musical farce written and directed by Gary Banker takes place at Fairlawn Mansion and Museum Oct. 23. Doors open at 7 p.m. with the performance beginning at 7:30 p.m. Reservations required at (715) 394-5712.

Flashlight tours: Take a flashlight tour of Fairlawn Mansion with costumed guides beginning at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 26-29. Meet at the gift shop. Bring your own flashlight. Cost $8 for adults, $6.50 for seniors and students. No reservations required, but be prepared for a short wait. Tours available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Oulu Corn Maze: The maze is open from noon to 6 p.m. Oct. 24-25 and Oct. 30-31 with a special Spooky Maze Night from 5-10 p.m. Oct. 30. Cost to enter the maze is $5 for children ages 6-12 and $6 for ages 13 and up. On the Spooky Maze Night, the cost is $7 for children ages 6-12 and $8 for ages 13 and older. Remember to bring your flashlight and wear comfortable footwear. The maze is located on the Ken Johnson farm at 2595 Pudas Road. Take US Highway 2 to Oulu Rock Road, drive north to the first stop sign, continue north on Highway B approximately three miles. Turn right on Pudas Road.

Haunted Warehouse: The Field Logic warehouse at 1230 Poplar Ave. offers thrills and chills on Oct. 30-31. The free haunted house is open from 6-10 p.m. both days with a special non-scary tour for younger visitors from 3-5 p.m. Oct. 31.

Teen party: The Cloquet Kiwanis Club invites area teens in grades seven through 10 to a Teen Halloween Party from 7 to 10 p.m. Oct. 30 at Pine Valley Park in Cloquet. The event includes costume contests, dancing, hayrides and lots of prizes. It is chaperoned by Cloquet Kiwanis Club members. Cost is $3 per student or $2 with a canned good donation.

UWS Trick or Treat: For the 15th year in a row, University of Wisconsin-Superior students open their residence halls to Halloween trick-or-treaters from 5-7 p.m. Oct. 31. Students in Crownhart, Curran-McNeill-Ostrander and Ross residence halls along Catlin Avenue will decorate their hallways and hand out treats to children through sixth grade. Crownhart Hall features “child friendly” decorations to avoid scaring small children. Children visiting any of the halls must be accompanied by an adult.
