The Northwestern High School girls volleyball team suffered its first conference defeat of the season with a 3-0 loss to the Barron Golden Bears Thursday night at the NHS gym in Maple.
The Tigers fell to 4-1 in the Heart O’ North Conference, and 15-4 overall, with losses of 25-18, 25-19 and 25-19.
The Tigers took an 8-4 lead in the opening game before falling behind 10-8 and 14-11, which forced Northwestern to call a time out. Things didn’t get much better after the break as the Bears outscored the Tigers 11-7 the rest of the game for the 25-18 win.
Northwestern jumped all over Barron in game two, scoring the first six points.
But the Bears gradually worked their way back into the game and forced ties at 9, 10, 11 and 13 before taking a 17-14 lead. Barron finished off the game by outscoring the Tigers 8-4.
The third game was much of the same as the Bears steadily pulled away from the Tigers for the six-point win.
Anna Morgan led the Tigers with 19 kills and 12 digs. Melissa Hogfeldt added 29 set assists.
The Tigers are at Hayward at 7 p.m. Tuesday and then host a Heart O’ North Conference tournament on Oct. 10.
