Horton’s Gym has a new home, owner Chuck Horton announced at a press conference Thursday prior to the kickoff of another season of Golden Gloves boxing at Grandma’s Sports Garden.
Horton didn’t want to give the exact address as some details are being worked out, but said it was on First Street near St. Luke’s hospital and would open Oct. 1.
Boxer Zach “Jungle Boy” Walters estimated the dimensions of the new facility to be roughly 75 by 45 feet, more than ample for the 40-plus boxers and athletes who train with Horton.
“It’s huge,” Walters said, comparing it to the inside of the Sports Garden.
A fire in June 2008 at 25 W. First St. forced Horton to find a new location for his gym. Boxers have since trained in Gary-New Duluth and at the old city hall building across from Fond-Du-Luth Casino.
In other boxing news, Horton said he would begin scheduling professional bouts alongside the amateur bouts at Grandma’s Sports Garden as early as October, featuring Horton’s headliners Walters and Andy “Kaos” Kolle on an alternating basis. Don’t expect them to be fighting other Minnesota boxers anytime soon, however, as Horton said he has broken off talks with Twin Cities promoters because of his frustration over the negotiations.
