City officials join summer school students today to celebrate the establishment of an outdoor classroom and six new interpretive trail messages along the Millennium Trail, with a ribbon cutting celebration and dedication.

The project is the result of two grants — one from the Wisconsin Coastal Management Program and the other from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. The new outdoor classroom is located at a popular intersection along the Millennium Trail, approximately three quarters of a mile west of the trailhead under a canopy of trees.

The classroom, which seats 60, was built to accommodate school district of Superior students and teachers, who are interested in environmental education, according to Mary Morgan, City Forester. “The outdoor classroom adds an exciting new element to the Superior Municipal Forest, “said Morgan.

The interpretive trail signs are placed along the trail at each bench rest-stop and are designed to share the story of the Superior Municipal Forest with visitors. The Environmental Services Division of the Public Works Department received the grants and worked in partnership with other Public Works Divisions to complete the project, valued at $25,000.

The ribbon cutting begins at 10 a.m. at the Millennium Trailhead at North 28th Street and Wyoming Avenue.

Teachers who want to reserve the new classroom may call the Parks & Recreation Division at (715) 395-7270.
