Blues double up West Duluth
Superior next faces Grand Rapids at 12:30 p.m. Saturday
HERMANTOWN -- The Superior Blues rallied past the West Duluth VFW for an 8-4 victory in the opening game of the Eskelson Tournament Friday afternoon at Fichtner Memorial Field in Hermantown.
With the Blues trailing 4-3 in the bottom of the sixth inning, Taylor Olson and Danny Kriedler hit two-run singles and Nick Sitek scored on Marty Manion’s ground ball to give Superior a four-run lead.
Manion then retired West Duluth in order in the seventh to pick up the win.
Jordan McDonald, who pitched the first four innings, and Manion combined in allowing seven hits with six strikeouts and no walks.
Olson had two of the Blues’ seven hits. Al Meehan added an RBI triple, Spencer Koskie doubled and Nick Sitek, Zach Magdzas and Kreidler singled.
Travis Magdzas doubled twice and Buetow singled twice for West Duluth. Tom Warren, who also singled, was the losing pitcher.
The Blues, now 7-1 on the season, play Grand Rapids at 12:30 p.m. Saturday. The tournament runs through Sunday.
