Michael H. “Rex” Kern, 52, of Superior, died Wednesday, April 29, 2009, at St. Luke’s Hospital, Duluth.
He was born Dec. 1, 1956, in Superior, son of Marjorie (Sandberg) and Keith Kern.
On July 17, 1976, in Superior, Michael Kern married Renee Vollmer.
Previously worked as a grain inspector for the State of Wisconsin Grain Commission, For the last 23 years, Rex worked as the assistant superintendent at Peavey/Gavilon. Also, over 18 years ago, he was the owner/PR of Jimmy’s Saloon in Billings Park.
Rex and Renee were life members of the Billings Park Civic Association. Rex was also a member of GEAP, Douglas County Tavern League and Wisconsin Tavern League.
He was a Superior Speedway sponsor and fan, and enjoyed NASCAR. He loved the Green Bay Packers, Milwaukee Brewers and Wisconsin Badgers.
Preceding him in death was his father.
Survivors include his wife of 32 wonderful years, Renee; daughter, Michelle Kern, Madison, Wis.; sons, Kevin (Angie Snyder) Kern and Keith Kern, both of Superior; granddaughter, Emma Rae Kern “The Apple Of Grandpa’s Eye,” Superior; mother, Marjorie Kern, Superior; sisters, Joanne (Vince) Sirocchi, Kenosha, Wis., and Kathy Michael, Addison, Ill; brothers, Thomas Kern, Solon Springs, Wis., and Dennis (Julie) Kern, Superior; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
The visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Saturday, May 2 at Downs Funeral Home, 1617 N. 19th St., Superior, and noon until the 1 p.m. service, Sunday, May 3 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, 1924 Wyoming Ave., Superior, with Reverend Sarah Larsen officiating.
Following the service, everyone is invited to a luncheon at the Billings Park Civic Association.
The interment will take place at Greenwood Cemetery, Superior, at a later date.
Pallbearers will be Dennis Johnson, Brian Keup, Wayne Hunter, Mark Pierce, Pat O’Brien, Mike Rydberg, Richard Schachte , Kevin “Bonsie” Maeder.
