The Douglas County Department of Health and Human Services would like to thank all foster parents during National Foster Care month in May. National Foster Care month provides foster parents with the much-deserved respect and appreciation as they provide an invaluable service to children and families in our community.

Currently, there are 15 licensed foster homes in Douglas County.

Foster care is often temporary care provided by licensed foster families to children in crisis. Foster parents provide a safe, stable, and loving home for children who are victims of abuse and neglect, children with special needs, and children who are involved with the juvenile justice system.

The Douglas County Department of Health and Human Services recognizes foster parents’ willingness to support children and families in crisis. The primary goal of foster care is for children to return to their families. When it is not possible for children to return to their families, an alternative, permanent plan is pursued.

Foster parents have chosen to take on responsibilities not everyone can handle. Their commitment to children and families is critical for ending cycles of abuse, neglect, or other family issues that often prevent children and families from reaching their full potential. The Douglas County Department of Health and Human Services truly appreciates and is thankful of our foster parents’ dedication, continuing supports time, and energy in providing care for children and families in crisis.
