WAUSAU, Wis. (AP) — A state appeals court has upheld a Superior man’s life prison sentence for killing a woman by repeatedly stabbing her with a knife and samurai sword after beating her with a heavy ashtray.

The 3rd District Court of Appeals ruled today that a jury properly heard a 911 call that captured sounds of the attack. The three-judge panel rejected Jason Borelli’s request for a new trial after he argued that the 911 call prejudiced the jury.

Borelli, now 35, was sentenced to life in prison with no chance for parole in the Jan. 7, 2006, killing of 29-year-old Leah Gustafson at her apartment.

A jury convicted Borelli of first-degree intentional homicide and rejected his insanity defense.
