The Superior Basketball Association will hold tryouts for the sixth- through eighth-grade tournament teams on Monday and Thursday at Northern Lights Elementary School.
Six teams will be chosen (depending on number trying out and interested SBA approved coaches): sixth-grade girls, sixth-grade boys, seventh-grade girls, seventh-grade boys, eighth-grade girls and eighth-grade boys.
The tournament teams will practice during the week and enter tournaments either locally or out of town on the weekends. The tournaments will allow the players to gain valuable experience against strong opponents. The times are as follows:
Tyout Times
5 to 6 p.m. — sixth-grade (current fifth-grade)
6 to 7 p.m. — seventh-grade (current sixth-grade)
7 to 8 p.m. — eighth-grade (current seventh-grade)
Girls tryouts April 13 and Boys tryouts April 16
*There will be no second tryout*
Those chosen for the tournament teams will not participate in the regular SBA city house league for sixth-eighth graders.
SBA will select individuals to run the tryouts. Players will be evaluated on individual passing, dribbling and shooting skills, offensive and defensive drills in small groups, and a possible scrimmage. The players with the best combined ranking will be selected for the team. Those not selected for the tournament team are eligible to play in the regular city league basketball program.
All players will be notified of tryout results on the night of tryouts.
The cost to participate on a tournament team will vary from team to team since they will attend different tournaments. The total cost per player varies per team but approximately run $150 to $200. The cost includes entry fees for all tournaments, new uniforms, insurance, etc. This cost may be partially or fully offset by various fund-raisers.
An $80 registration fee is due at tryouts (no exceptions). Check or money order only. No cash will be accepted. If the player does not make the tournament team, the $80 registration fee will be refunded for that player. No other refunds will apply. Any questions should be directed to the SBA at (218) 348-0467 or sbabasketball@hotmail.com
Anyone interested in coaching or playing on an 2009-10 fifth-grade team (this year’s fourth graders, boys or girls) will need to contact the SBA for information.
