Elizabeth “Betty” Lois Berg, 94, a resident of Superior, Wis. died on Thursday, April 9, 2009, in St. Mary’s Hospital of Superior.
She was born on April 11, 1914, in Superior to Lillian Elizabeth (McInnis) and Alexander Lemon. She was a 1931 graduate of Superior Central High School and earned her bachelor of education degree in high school education as well as her degree in kindergarten-primary education from the former Superior State Teacher’s College. She had also attended Columbia University in New York, N. Y. She was an elementary teacher in the Superior school system, having taught school at the Ericsson, Nelson Dewey, Itasca and Cooper Schools.
Betty was a member of the United Presbyterian Church (formerly the Hammond Avenue Presbyterian Church), where she taught Sunday school and was a member of the Board of Deacons. She was also a member of the Superior Area Retired Educators Assoc., Chapter BG, PEO Sisterhood, and the Memorial Hospital Auxiliary.
She lived in Superior most of her life, except from 1980 to 1988 when she resided at Spider Lake near Gordon. While residing in this area she was a member of the Gordon Presbyterian Church.
Betty is lovingly remembered by her children, John A. “Sandy” (Marge) Berg of Superior and Elizabeth “Liz” (Bill) Pence of Sun City West, Ariz., formerly of Superior and Wascott, Wis.; three grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her husband, John Oswald Berg on Nov. 19, 1988; a brother, Alex Lemon in 1936; and her parents.
Visitation will be in Downs Funeral Home, corner of Ogden Avenue and 19th Street, on Monday, April 13 beginning at 5 p.m. Inurnment will take place at Greenwood Cemetery.
If desired, memorials in Elizabeth’s name may be made to the United Presbyterian Church.
