Colvin wins four events, Diedrich sets record at Tigers’ Simpson Invite

Zach Colvin was the big winner at Friday’s Dennis Simpson Track and Field Invitational as the junior from Superior High School finished first in four events.

The event was hosted by Northwestern High School and held Friday evening at the UW-Superior Health & Wellness Center.

Colvin won the 55-meter dash, the 200- and 400-meter runs and the long jump while teammates Matt Swanson won the 1,600, Kevin Olson finished first in the pole vault and Peter Drinkwine won the triple jump.

Colvin qualified for state in the long jump last season.

The host Tigers won the 4x200 and 4x400 relays, and junior Steve Tecker won the high jump. Junior Ryan Miesbauer had a 53-foot throw in the shot put to finish second, also putting him at No. 3 for the all-time record in that event at Northwestern behind Tom Burke and Jeff Polkoski.

In the girls’ meet, Superior’s Raya Kosey won the 400 and Christa Diedrich the triple jump with a school record distance of 32 feet.

“It was a joy to see Christa break the school record,” said Superior coach Phil Roe. “I have seen her work hard in practice every day with a positive attitude, so it was great to see her attain her goal.”

Carolyn Prochaska was Northwestern’s lone individual winner after finishing first in the pole vault.

Superior won the boys’ team title and finished second among the girls, 56 points behind Esko.

Northwestern’s boys and girls teams each finished third.

“I was pleased with our first meet and the way our athletes competed,” NHS coach John Woodbury said. “It should be an exciting year.”

Superior and Northwestern will both be in action again Friday when the Spartans host the Packy Paquette Invitational. The event, which is also taking place at UWS, begins at 4 p.m.
