Yellowjacket kickers sweep Finlandia

The University of Wisconsin-Superior men’s and women’s soccer teams combined to defeat the Finlandia Lions 24-0 on a rainy Sunday afternoon at the Superior High School fields.
Gubio Henrique scored three goals and dished out three assists as the Yellowjacket men ran away from the Lions 15-0 and the UWS women improved to 2-5-1 with a 9-0 victory.
Thomas Shuldheisz added three goals and Jared Besser chipped in with two goals as the ’Jacket men improved to 5-2 with their third straight victory.
Also getting into the scoring action for UWS with a goal apiece were Dan Warnke, Logan George, Aaron Bresser, Eric Nilsen, Tyler Houghton, Misuharu Ishizawa and Aaron Bergerson.
The ’Jackets also got two assists apiece from Warnke and Mitch Mekoli and one assist each from Ben Mooney, George, Matt Bouvine, Bresser, Nilsen and Nate Ortler.
UWS keeper Tony Sorenson, who recorded his third shutout of the season, finished with three saves.
UWS peppered Finlandia’s goalkeepers with 33 shots, of which 23 were on goal.
Matt Erickson and Eric Johnson combined on eight saves for the Lions.
The ’Jackets are in action at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Northland College in Ashland.
Women split
The UWS women improved to 2-5-1 before a Parent’s Day crowd of 75.
The Yellowjackets received scoring from six different players with Heather Collander leading the way with three goals.
Andrea McKay and Amy Israel added two goals and an assist apiece, Breanna Ean had one goal and three assists. Karley Potter chipped in with a goal and Andrea Beck had an assist.
UWS attempted 37 shots and 15 corner kicks and held Finlandia with out a shot for the entire 90 minutes.
Recording the shutout for the Yellowjackets was Anna Olsen. Much busier was Finlandia’s Shannon Feldpausch, who finished with 14 saves.
The ’Jackets are off until hosting UW-Eau Claire at 4 p.m. Sept. 24.
The UWS women started the weekend with a 3-0 loss Saturday at UW-La Crosse.
The Eagles, 3-2 and 1-0, outshot UWS 42-1.
Olsen finished with 15 saves for UWS while Amanda Clark picked up the save without making a save.
Beth Leque had the Yellowjackets’ lone shot.
Chelsea Hall, Ramsey Weyenberg and Michaela Kocon scored for the Eagles.
’JACKET JOTTINGS: UWLC leads the all-time series with UWS 16-0. … Clark’s shutout was her third this season. She now has 13 at UWLC, which is third best in school history. … Saturday’s attendance was 60.
