Narrowly missing the team title, the Superior High School girls swimming squad passed all local teams to take the runner-up spot at the Soderlind Invitational Saturday at Morgan Park.

Although winning no individual events, the Spartans showed considerable depth in earning 408 points, just short of winner Milaca’s 423 points. Superior improved in nearly every event to outpace conference arch-rival Proctor-Hermantown in team scoring.

Senior Captain Lindsey Splinter placed a strong second in the 100 breaststroke, an eyelash ahead of teammate Anna Anklam. Junior captain Karen VanOvermeiren took third place in the individual medley and 100 butterfly.

Jackie Doyle joined Splinter, VanOvermeiren and Anklam to place second in the medley relay. Freshman Kelsey Hansen and sophomore Emily Aller put Splinter and VanOvermeiren into position to challenge Proctor-Hermantown for first in the 200 free relay.

With 16 girls scoring points, SHS coach George Lehman said credit goes to the whole team. Nevertheless, Lehman singled out Faydra Lagro, Kacie Heinen, Kayla Bedard, Elyse Gunderson and Elizabeth Johnson for significant improvements and performances.

Thursday Superior again travels to Morgan Park for a 5 p.m. Lake Superior Conference meet against Denfeld.
