James Fiandt, 62, died Tuesday, May 13, 2008, unexpectedly, in his residence.

He was born on Feb. 16, 1946, in Superior.

He attended Cathedral School, grades one through 12 and the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Jim’s college days were interrupted after being drafted into the Army, serving a two year tour of duty in Vietnam. Jim proudly served his country even though he was against war.

After graduating from the University of Wisconsin-Superior, Jim was employed as a chemist for the Environmental Protection Agency, retiring from the Duluth lab in 2002. Prior to that, Jim worked at Lignell’s pharmacy department throughout high school and college. Jim was a chemist at heart, often times blowing up homemade wine in his pantry. The blueberry stains remain on the ceiling as a memento.

Jim enjoyed gardening, fine wine, dining and reading. His favorite author, Charles Dickens, was a proponent for the underdog. Jim lived that idea throughout his life. He was a die-hard Democrat in politics and philosophy.

Surviving Jim are loving family members Bill and Sally Fiandt, Rochester, Minn., Mike and Barb Fiandt, Cambridge, Cathy Fiandt Vena, Cudahy; and nieces and nephews, Lisa, Chandra, Michael, Teri, Briana, Mary and Bill; his good friends, Bob Evered, Jim Pearson, Lee Anderson, all of Superior; and special friend Barb Fiandt Resheske, Lake Nebagamon. We will never be the same without him.

A time of remembrance is 4-7 p.m. Monday in the Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home.

While flowers are lovely, they are also transient. Jim was always providing a home to stray cats and dogs. He would have preferred that memorials be sent to the Animal Rescue Federation (ARF) or to the Douglas County Humane Society.

Seize the day, for tomorrow may never come. Jim will be deeply missed.
