A 72-year-old woman was pulled from a lake east of the Twin Cities on Saturday morning after she jumped in to save her dog.
Washington County sheriff’s deputy Tom Stafford said the woman was walking her dog along the shore of Lake Elmo when the dog either jumped or fell in. The woman followed the dog into the water in an attempt to rescue it.
"She didn’t realize how deep and how cold the water is," Stafford said.
The woman told Stafford she clung to a fishing pier for five to 10 minutes before a passerby who was docking his pontoon boat heard her cries for help and pulled her out.
Several agencies responded to the scene, but Stafford said the woman was warmed up and returned to her vehicle without any need for extensive medical treatment. It did not appear the dog suffered any lasting health consequences.
