City fathers had expected the oil to arrive from the new Lakehead Pipeline at 4 a.m. December 5, 1950, but the party by local dignitaries was crashed when the oil started flowing the evening before.

The beginnings of oil and the building of an oil refinery in Superior brought national attention. Syndicated columnist Lou Schneider wrote that the arrival of oil will make Superior the nation’s largest oil center.

Jack McKenna and Lew Martin host “Radio Superior,” which airs at 5:30 p.m. every Friday on Wisconsin Public Radio station KUWS, 91.3 FM.
