Spartans hand out wrestling awards
The Superior High School wrestling team recently held its annual awards banquet.
The Superior High School wrestling team recently held its annual awards banquet. The guest speaker was hall-of-fame coach Jim Richie, who is the current head coach at Rice Lake High School.
The evening was highlighted with Spartan coach Bill Gedde giving out the following awards:
• Rob Urbaniak Rookie of the Year — freshman Cole Schorr
• Most Inspirational Wrestler — sophomore Billy Lamoreaux
• Most Improved Wrestler — senior captain Jake Regner, who was Heart ’O North Conference champion and sectional qualifier
• Spartan Academic Wrestler — sophomore Dominic Frost, who carries a 4.0 grade point average
• Most Dedicated Wrestler — sophomore Nikola Bogojevic, who was HON Conference champion, Spartan Classic champion and sectional qualifier
• Spartan Leadership — senior captain Jared Ursin, a sectional qualifier who exhibited continuous and outstanding dedication, commitment and leadership throughout his high school career.
• Outstanding Spartan — senior captain Ryan VanPuymbrouck, who was presented with the Coaches Award, sighting his numerous high school wrestling career highlights.
VanPuymbrouck is the Spartans’ all-time career wins leader, Heart ’O North Conference champion, regional champion, two-time Spartan Classic champion, three-time sectional qualifier, as well as numerous other awards and accomplishments.
Junior Robert Murphy was also named captain for the 2008-09 season.
