Several weeks ago, I spent a few days in Florida. It was fun to enjoy the warm weather, but then I looked around and saw many empty buildings and “For Sale” signs on nearly every third home. When I talked to some of the people living in the area, I found that they believe the worst is still to come!
I spent an afternoon with a friend who owns 11 dealerships in Daytona. We compared both cities — Superior and Daytona Beach. Daytona is experiencing zero growth. Superior’s employment is up 1 percent. Over a $6 billion expansion job at Murphy Oil is in the works, as well as the $60 million addition to the UWS campus. This means over 5,000 jobs in the next five years. Also, Superior can be proud of the fact that it has new schools. There are many reasons to be pleased that we live/work in this “Superior” city.
My friend loves his city; in fact, he is mayor of Daytona, but he certainly is jealous “Yankees in the Northland.” Not the cold — just the economy.
