Cleanup continues at explosion site

Work continues on the clean up and environmental testing at the Cortec Spray Technologies in Spooner, where an explosion injured two workers last Tuesday.

Spooner Fire Chief Darren Vik reported a structural engineer has declared portions of the building unsafe to enter. Investigators, he said, will be present as unsafe portions are removed.

This process may take several weeks.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources will continue to monitor the facility and the area around it for any possible runoff contamination. Preliminary testing has shown little air or water contamination following the fire that resulted from the explosion. Waste Management Specialist Jim Ross said it may be a week or two before any of the tests results will be available.
