CHURCH: Benefit recital features organ music

Cathedral of Christ the King presents a benefit recital at 7 p.m. April 4.

Cathedral of Christ the King presents a benefit recital at 7 p.m. April 4. Cathedral pianist/organist Gretchen Johnston and Rachel Vanda, assistant musician for the Cathedral School, will perform music from Mozart, Chopin, Prokofiev, Debussy and DeRose. Proceeds go to the fund for a new organ at Cathedral.

“Our current organ is a rental practice organ in need of a good deal of repair and is not adequate for leading congregations or accompanying concerts,” Johnston said. This is the first of a series of benefit events planned to raise money for a new instrument. Tickets are $10 at the door.

Johnston graduated from The College of St. Scholastica in Duluth with a double degree in music performance and education. She has a master’s degree in music with an emphasis in piano performance.

She teaches privately and is the music teacher at Cathedral school.

Vanda recently graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Superior with a bachelor’s degree in music. Besides assisting at Cathedral school, she teaches at UWS conservatory and in the surrounding area.
