Evergreen girls still standing

The Northwood High School girls basketball team is the last local team still standing in the WIAA playoffs

The Northwood High School girls basketball team is the last local team still standing in the WIAA playoffs after defeating Drummond 42-24 Thursday night.

“The team played excellent defense, keeping Drummond from finding an offensive rhythm,” said Jason Schulz, Northwood head coach. “I’m very proud of my team.”

The Evergreens relied on their defense to get a jump on Drummond, claiming a 14-3 lead after one quarter. Northwood extended its lead to 26-10 at halftime and 36-22 by the end of the third quarter. In the final period, the Evergreens again played stingy defense, holding Drummond to just two points.

Leading Northwood in scoring was Ashley Albano with 12 points. Ashlee Blegen also finished in double figures with 10 points for the Evergreens.

With the win, Northwood advances to play Siren Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in Webster. Siren defeated the Solon Springs Eagles 56-40 Thursday to advance.

“This Saturday’s game against Siren should be a barn burner,” Schulz said. “They are a very good team and are playing very well.”
