Duluth cruiserweight Al “The Haitian Temptation” Sands fights Chicago’s Chris “Cold Steel” Thomas in the main event of a pro-am boxing card tonight at Grandma’s Sports Garden.
Sands, 26, has won five straight bouts to improve to 7-1 with seven knockouts. He is coming off a second-round technical knockout of Jonathan Corn on Feb. 9 in St. Paul.
Thomas, 41, is 17-17-2 with 14 knockouts but has lost eight straight and 13 of his last 14 bouts, including his last fight, a six-round unanimous decision to Max Heyman on Sept. 22 in Santa Fe, N.M.
Promoter Zach “Jungle Boy” Walters is also expected to make a professional announcement at 7 p.m. prior to tonight’s card, part of the Friday Night Fights boxing series. There are 13 amateur bouts scheduled for tonight and two professional bouts, with St. Paul’s Brad “Bully” Herroff (2-0) featured in the co-main event. Tickets are $15 in advance through ticketfly.com or $20 at the door.
Laase (10-1) will take on James Wayka (16-11-1) in a scheduled eight-round light welterweight bout, Lorenzi (1-5-1) will fight Kevin Tjaden (0-1) in a four-round cruiserweight bout and Anderson (2-0) will fight Branden Cluever (1-0) in a four-round welterweight bout.
Former Minnesota Vikings defensive end Ray Edwards is also part of the card and will fight Van Goodman (2-3-2), a former amateur standout who should provide a stiffer challenge.
Edwards (3-0) won his last fight with a first-round knockout of Nick Capes on Feb. 9 in West Fargo, N.D., with Capes drawing a suspension for flopping after a video of the incident went viral on YouTube.
