Bridge rollover injures two

Two people were injured in a one-vehicle rollover on the Blatnik Bridge in Superior early this morning.

Two people were injured in a one-vehicle rollover on the Blatnik Bridge in Superior early this morning.

According to a news release issued by Superior Police Capt. Matt Markon:

A full-size sport utility vehicle was trying to negotiate the on ramp from U.S. Highway 53 onto the northbound lane of the Blatnik Bridge. It appears the vehicle crossed both northbound lanes of traffic and struck the inner concrete bridge divider. It bounced off the inner abutment and struck the outer concrete wall and rolled onto its side.

Another motorist called 911. The Superior Police Department, Superior Fire Department and Gold Cross Ambulance responded.

Two of the vehicle’s seven passengers were injured. The driver, a 39-year-old Duluth man, was taken to St. Luke’s Hospital in Duluth with what appeared to be non-life-threatening injuries. A 28-year-old Duluth woman complained of minor injuries and was not transported by ambulance.

Duluth-bound traffic was stopped for about 45 minutes. Speed is believed to be a contributing factor.

The driver was cited for not having a valid driver’s license. The crash, which occurred around 2 a.m., remains under investigation by the Superior Police Department.
