Spartan girls fall in overtime at Hayward

The season came to abrupt end for the Superior High School girls hockey team with a 3-2 overtime loss to Hayward Tuesday night at the Hayward Sports Center.

Superior forced overtime with Aleeah Baker’s unassisted goal with 1:10 remaining.

The Spartans then had a 5-on-3 power play in overtime and seemed to score the winning goal. but the play was whistled dead before the puck crossed the goal line.

“It was a quick whistle,” SHS coach Scott VanDamme said. “Baker took a shot, and it may have been tipped, but it hit the goalie and went in.

“Then a minute later there was a mini screen and they scored on a back-hander.”

Brittany Christman scored the winning goal 3:19 into overtime with an assist from Hannah Turnbull.

Baker also gave Superior a 1-0 lead at 12:14 of the first period with assists from Amanda Baker and Amanda LeBard.

Hayward tied it up at 12:37 of the second period on Alyssa Ahlgren’s goal and then took a 2-0 lead with Josie McShane’s unassisted goal at 9:03 of the third period.

Jenny Cobb had 29 saves for Hayward and Janine Seifert 21 for Superior.

“It was a tough loss,” VanDamme said. “We had our chances, including a breakaway early in the game that hit a pipe. We just couldn’t put it away.”

SPARTAN SPIN: SHS ends the season with a 8-13-1 record. ... Seniors playing their final game for Superior were Anna Pettingill, Amanda Baker, Ashley Martin, LeBard, Megan Atkinson, Ashlee Olson, Chelsey Jarzin, Jessica DeVinck and Seifert. Also a senior is manager Marcia Houle.
