Lake-effect snow advisory posted for Northland

The Lake Superior snowmaking machine was expected to kick in overnight and Thursday morning bringing several inches of new snow near the big lake from roughly Silver Bay through the Twin Ports and east along the South Shore.

Most of the Northland received 1-3 inches of new snow from a Clipper storm on Wednesday, but light snow was expected to continue overnight and most of Thursday near Lake Superior, with totals up to 6 inches and even more in some higher elevation areas just away from the lake.

It all depends on how east and northeast winds set up over the lake.

The National Weather Service in Duluth posted a lake effect snow advisory in effect until 6 p.m. Thursday from about Silver Bay, through Duluth-Superior and east to Saxon Harbor, Wis.

Another round of snow is expected Sunday as a major low-pressure system moves into the Midwest from the southwestern U.S. That storm has the potential to bring significant snow for some part of Minnesota. Exactly where the storm will hit remains unclear, said Roman Berdes, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Duluth. There could even be some sleet and freezing rain depending on temperatures.

High temperatures are expected to remain in the 20s Thursday and Friday and rise into the 30s by the weekend. Another round of cold air is possible by Valentine’s Day.
