Four Superior High School Spartan wrestlers qualified for the sectional tournament next Saturday at D.C. Everest in Schofield.
Moving one step away from a state tournament berth were senior captain Ryan VanPuymbrouck, who place first at 140 pounds; Nikola Bogojevic, who was second at 285; and Jared Ursin (145) and Jake Regner (189), who each place fourth.
After receiving a first round bye as the No. 1 seed, VanPuymbrouck improved to 35-2 on the season by pinning Jimmy Harper of Eau Claire Memorial in 2:16 and then winning a 9-3 decision over Hudson’s Nick Larson.
“Ryan wrestled a brilliant tournament,” SHS coach Bill Gedde said. “He missed three days of practice this week with the flu but he is that physically and mentally tough to overcome adversity to accomplish his goals.”
Bogojevic improved to 30-3 with pins over River Falls’ Alex Anderson and ECM’s Greg Antonson and a 17-8 loss to Hudson’s Cole Tobin.
“Nikola wrestled a great match against Tobin. We expect to meet him again next week in the finals,” Gedde said. “We will make a couple of adjustments in strategy. Nikola is never content with runner-up status.”
Ursin pinned ECM’s Tim Saxe in 1:26, but then lost by fall to champion Alec Schindler of Chippewa Falls in 4:28 and by decision to Treston Koehler, River Falls, 6-3.
Regner won a 7-6 decision over Hudson’s Nathan Eby; then lost by fall to Corey Anderson, Menomonie, 1:04 and Luke Johnson, River Falls, 3:49.
“Congratulations goes out to our other senior captains, Ursin and Regner,” Gedde said. “Both have worked very hard this year and deserve a shot next weekend.
The other guys that fell a little short have nothing to be ashamed of. They wrestled hard and represented our community well. They all had great seasons and have bright futures in wrestling.”
Finishing fifth for Superior were juniors Robert Murphy (125), Will Gedde (130) and Andrew Tainter (152); and freshman Cole Schorr (171).
Other Spartans that participated were freshmen Tom Naughton (103) and Tyler Motschman (112); and sophomores Dominic Frost (135) and Billy Lamoreaux (160).
