Superior High School seniors Jordan Olson and David Aller qualified in individual events for the WIAA Swimming and Diving Tournament next weekend in Madison.
Fellow seniors RJ Zimmerman and Adam Sislo also teamed up with Olson and Aller to advance to state in the 200 medley and 200 freestyle relay. The four placed fifth and third, respectively, which exceeded state qualifying times.
Sectional champions, and the best 18 additional swimmers, in the state earn state berths.
Olson swam 22.71 seconds to tie Bill Elanson (1980) for the ninth spot in SHS history in the 50 freestyle. Olson will be making his first individual state showing after two previous relay appearances.
Aller also dropped to a season best 1:04.17 in the 100 breaststroke to earn a podium spot and a third individual trip to state.
“Going in we knew both relays had to drop at least two seconds in each relay to have a shot at state,” SHS coach George Lehman said. “The 200 medley dropped three seconds and the 200 freestyle relay dropped two earning Sislo and Zimmerman their first trips to state.”
Also for the Spartans, Mike Sherwood and Ron Case both dove to their best scores and placed fifth and seventh in the 1-meter diving, Andre Anderson, Dylan Holck and Vikram Gill improved markedly in their events and Nate Pfau improved several seconds in the backstroke during his final race of the season.
The 2008 Boys WIAA Division 1 State Meet is scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday at the UW Natatorium in Madison.
