SPOONER (AP) — A 72-year-old man is dead in northwestern Wisconsin after a shootout with police.
The Washburn County sheriff’s department says two Spooner police responded early Saturday to a report of an older man peering into vehicles in an apartment complex parking lot.
One of the officers went up to a man matching a description of the suspect sitting in a gray minivan. But the department says the man got out and pointed a rifle at the officer.
Shots were exchanged, leaving Phillip Metzig dead. Metzig lived in a nearby apartment.
The sheriff’s department is investigating along with the Wisconsin Division of Criminal Investigation.
Both officers are on administrative leave as required by police department rules.
The autopsy is scheduled to be performed in St. Paul.
