Virginia won the final event of the evening to pull out a 95-89 victory over the Superior High School boys swimming and diving team Thursday evening in the SHS pool.
With the score tied, Virginia won the 400 freestyle relay to spoil the Spartans’ final home meet of the season.
Highlights for Superior were sophomore Vikram Gill providing a come-from-behind victory in the 500 freestyle and taking a strong second behind teammate R.J. Zimmerman in the 200 freestyle.
David Aller was also a double individual winner swimming away with the 100 breaststroke and 200 individual medley and Jordan Olson won the 100 free and swam to second in the 100 backstroke.
Olson, Aller, Zimmerman and Adam Sislo opened the meet with a victory in the 200 medley relay. Andre Anderson joined Sislo, Aller and Olson to win the 200 free relay and Sislo swam a personal best while missing first in the 50 free by four one-hundredths of a second.
“I was pleased that more than 75 percent of the squad had at least one best time,” SHS coach George Lehman said. “We fought hard and although we narrowly lost, it was a very good meet going into sectionals next weekend.
“As the team begins to rest for sectionals, performances are often uneven, a few slow times reflect this adaptation, not lack of spirit.”
Superior next swims at the Hibbing Invitational Saturday with diving slated for 10 a.m. and swimming at 1 p.m. The WIAA sectional meet is Feb. 9 at Hudson.
