’Tis the season of slippery sidewalks, and this week you have a chance to pick up some pointers on how to maintain safe footing.

The Environmental Services Division of the city of Superior’s Public Works Department will offer a couple of free smart salting winter workshops for homeowners to learn about how de-icers work and how best to apply them, while minimizing the environmental impact. The presentations will take place at 11 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Superior Public Library, 1530 Tower Ave. No registration is necessary.

Also this week at the Superior Public Library, there will be a free showing of “The Greenest Building,” a film on the benefits of preserving buildings and reusing them rather than tearing them down to make room for new structures.

The documentary looks at the value of preserving a community’s character and creating local jobs to boot. It will be shown free of charge at 6:30 p.m. Thursday. For more information, call (218) 525-5098.
