A 25-7 run by the Duluth East Greyhounds led to a 69-49 victory over the Superior High School girls basketball team Thursday night in Duluth.
Superior’s Shannon Lehikoinen made a 3-pointer in transition midway through the first half to tie the game at 19. But East followed with its run to pull away from the Spartans.
“To their credit, they outrebounded us, transitioned well, and shot the ball well,” SHS coach Danny Schulz said.
Laura Amys and Shannon Lehikoinen led the Spartans with 13 and 12 points, respectively.
Bettye Nelson added seven points, Taylor Kosey had six, Britnee Blake and Danielle Berger had three apiece, MacKenzie Newman and Christa Diedrich had two apiece and Janelle Strewler made a free throw.
“Laura played extremely well in the interior,” Schulz said. “Rachel Samuelson did a nice job getting the ball inside to her, ending the game with three assists.”
Nikita Wilmers led East with 14 points. Marisa Yernatich added 12 points, Taylor Tyllia had 11, Brianna Larson 10 and Macie Dorow and Jackie Reinemann nine each.
“We hustled back nicely, but did not do a good job of finding their shooters in transition which allowed them to spot up and hit some shots,” Schulz said. “Laura, Shannon and Taylor did a good job defensively on Marisa Yernatich, holding her to only 12 points.”
