Duluth’s unemployment rate continued its downward seasonal slide in October, reaching 5.8 percent, down from 5.9 percent in September.

Most of the Northland outside Duluth also saw declines, with fewer people on the unemployment rolls — coupled with fewer jobs and a smaller work force, defined as people working and actively looking for jobs — according to state data released this week.

  • In St. Louis County, the jobless rate dropped to 6 percent, its lowest showing since late 2008. The September rate was 6.1 percent.

  • Unemployment in the Greater Twin Ports area dropped from 6.1 percent in September to 5.9 percent in October. The Twin Ports area includes all of St. Louis, Carlton and Douglas counties.

  • In the larger Northeast Minnesota area, the unemployment rate fell to 6.1 percent, its lowest level in a year, down from 6.2 percent in September.

Statewide, unemployment remained at 5.8 percent, the same as September, while the U.S. rate rose from 7.8 percent to 7.9 percent. State and national rates are seasonally adjusted; the local rates are not.
