As the Minnesota Duluth men’s hockey team opens the 2012-13 season today, fans should again be able to find home games on the My9 Sports Network through Charter Communications in Duluth-Superior and over the air.

There was concern earlier this year that UMD athletic events wouldn’t be shown on cable TV because of a dispute between Charter Communications and Granite Broadcasting, which owns the local NBC affiliate, the Northland’s NewsCenter.

Granite Broadcasting was asking Charter to pay a fee for use of the My9-My9 Sports Network and the CW Television Network channel. The sides reached an agreement in July and details were not released.

All 19 UMD men’s home hockey games are being shown on the My9 Sports Network beginning with today’s 7:07 p.m. matchup with Ohio State. Tom Hansen and Judd Medak are again the announcing team. UMD’s six home football games are also being aired, along with selected high school football and hockey games in 2012-13, and two UMD women’s hockey games.

A handful of callers contacting the News Tribune recently expressed concern that they were unable to locate My9 on their televisions. David Jensch, vice president and station manager for Northland’s NewsCenter, said there are certain factors affecting channel reception:

  • If a cable subscriber has only a basic cable package, the My9 and CW channels likely are not carried, he said.

  • If a cable subscriber has moved from analog to digital programming, it may be necessary to run a channel scan (found in the TV’s menu queue) to reprogram and regain local channels.

  • My9 and the local CW are not available to satellite subscribers.

  • Viewers without cable or satellite programming can find the local channels over the air with the use of an attached-to-the-TV antenna. Cable and satellite subscribers can disable their provider and use an over-the-air antenna to view My9.

  • My9 is available on KBJR DT 6.2 locally and KRII 11.9 (Range 11) on the Iron Range.

UMD and the My9 Sports Network renewed a contract for a third year in June.
