Firefighters rescue two Superior boys from rudderless paddle boat

An afternoon outing on Allouez Bay got a little scary for two Superior boys on Friday when the rudder on their paddleboat broke.

The Superior Fire Department was called to the bay at 5:08 p.m. with a report of a paddleboat circling aimlessly in shallow waters about 200 yards off shore, Battalion Chief Steve Edwards said.

The Coast Guard also was notified but was unable to approach the paddleboat because the water was too shallow. Superior firefighters were able to reach them with a flat-bottomed jet boat. The boys, ages 12 and 14, were brought to Loon’s Foot Landing where their parents met them, Edwards said.

No one was hurt, although the boys “were a little scared,” Edwards said.
