Duluth Padres slip past Port Wing in 9th

AMATEUR BASEBALL: The Duluth Padres claimed their second consecutive victory in the bottom of the ninth inning when they took advantage of an error to top the Port Wing Boilers 5-4 in an Upper 13 League contest Sunday at Minnesota Duluth’s Bulldog Park.

The Duluth Padres claimed their second consecutive victory in the bottom of the ninth inning when they took advantage of an error to top the Port Wing Boilers 5-4 in an Upper 13 League contest Sunday at Minnesota Duluth’s Bulldog Park.

Padres pinch-runner Nathan Windschill scored from second base via a throwing error on Corey Pavlich’s sacrifice bunt.

The score was knotted 1-1 before Duluth scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth. But Port Wing notched three runs in the top of the ninth to tie the score Jesse Olson earned the win in relief of Anthony Bush by striking out four, walking three and allowing three unearned runs on four hits in 3.1 innings. Jared Gustafson was the losing pitcher in relief of starter Derek Jardine. Gustafson faced three batters in the ninth without recording an out. He allowed one unearned run on two hits.

Nick Moran and Tim Nylund had two hits apiece for Duluth, while Gustafson was 3-for-5 and Andrew Urbaniak was 2-for-5 for Port Wing.

Duluth is now 2-0 in league play and Port Wing dropped to 0-3.
