A Duluth man accused of trying to cash a forged check at a Superior bank made an initial appearance in Douglas County Circuit Court on Thursday.
John Newton Hancock, 33, faces one felony count of forgery. A $1,000 signature bond was ordered with the condition that he have no contact with Bay Side Recycling Corp., the company whose check he tried to cash.
According to the criminal complaint:
Hancock tried to cash a check allegedly made out to him by the company. It was reported as stolen or forged by the bank, and Superior police responded.
Hancock told the officers he had been asked by friends to cash the check.
While booking him at the jail, two more Bay Side Recycling checks made out to Hancock were found in his possession.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Wednesday.
