Wisconsin-La Crosse topped Wisconsin-Superior 6-1 and 6-5 Saturday in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader at Wade Stadium.
Eagle pitcher Tim Verthein dominated the Yellowjackets in the opener, tossing a three-hitter and striking out 13. Dan Genrich took the loss, giving up six runs on eight hits over six innings. He walked four and struck out two.
The Yellowjackets showed more offense in the second game, but a quartet of errors plagued them. Wyatt Soderquist led UWS at the plate, going 3-for-4 and ending just a home run short of hitting for the cycle. He also scored a run and drove in two. TJ Evenson also hit a 3-run home run to give UWS a 5-4 lead in the sixth inning. Mike Swanson pitched his second complete game of the week, allowing six runs (two earned) on seven hits. He walked two and struck out six in the loss.
The Yellowjackets (17-16 overall, 8-10 WIAC) and the Eagles (25-9, 16-2) will play another doubleheader today at Wade Stadium beginning at noon.
