It reached the 70s under sunny skies in the Northland on Saturday, but parts of the region may wake up to a coating of snow Monday morning as a strong storm system brings a mixed bag of weather.

“By 7 o’clock Monday morning it should be snowing in just about all of Northeastern Minnesota and Northwestern Wisconsin,” said Greg Frosig, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Duluth.

It will rain most of the day today throughout the region, Frosig said, with the possibility of thunderstorms, some of which could be severe, in Northwestern Wisconsin this afternoon. Any storms will give way to just rain after nightfall, he said.

After midnight, rain will start to mix with snow beginning in the area from International Falls to the Brainerd Lakes and spreading through the region.

Snow accumulations tonight into Monday may reach:

  • 2 to 5 inches from International Falls to the Brainerd Lakes

  • 2 to 4 inches for Grand Rapids and the Iron Range

  • 1 to 2 inches for the Twin Ports

  • 2 to 4 inches for the South Shore because of possible lake effect on Monday

The quick change is not extreme considering what time of year it is, Frosig said.

“We do see systems like this, especially in April,” he said. “It’s not out of the ordinary to have this much cold air pulled in out of Canada.”

Any snow that falls won’t last long, as temperatures across the Northland are forecast to reach near 50 on Tuesday.
