Two college students face charges for ‘adventurous’ lark in Superior

Perhaps proving that it pays to cooperate with police, two college students received court dates to face Class B misdemeanor disorderly conduct charges this week after officials said they admitted to entering Superior High School on an “adventurous” lark back in February.

The charges could have been much more serious.

Superior police said they originally received reports of two people breaking into the school, but only received the names of suspects this week.

Cody Chaffee, 19, and Brittney Kemi, 19, were taken into custody Wednesday and questioned by the police. In a news release, police said the pair were “very cooperative” in interviews.

According to the police and the district attorney’s office, investigators — after watching surveillance and listening to the two tell their story — determined that burglary or trespassing charges did not apply. Police said Chaffee and Kemi entered an open door and did not do any damage or take anything while inside the school.

According to police, Chaffee and Kemi said they found a ladder leaning against the building on Feb. 27 and climbed onto the roof of the school “for fun.” They saw an open door and went inside the school and “proceeded to run about inside the building,” police said. At some point an alarm was tripped and they quickly left.

Police said they got the names of the suspects from several sources, including those using the department’s texting tip line.

The misdemeanor charges could bring a $500 fine, 30 days in jail or both.
