ELKHORN, Wis. — Walworth County authorities have called off their search for a person suspected of opening fire on a hunter with a handgun on Saturday.

The sheriff's office said it received a report of a shooting incident Saturday about 8:30 a.m. on public hunting grounds of the Kettle Moraine State Forest.

A caller said he and his father were legally hunting deer and wearing blaze orange. The father told his son another unknown male hunter wearing camouflage-type clothing fired at him once with a handgun. The father fired back once with his hunting rifle.

Neither the father nor son was hurt. Deputies don't know whether the other male was hurt.

Authorities searched the area for seven hours using SWAT and K9 teams and a police helicopter. No additional searches are planned.
