College soccer: St. Scholastica senior defender Bryan Olson of South St. Paul, Minn., was named the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference men’s defensive player of the year Wednesday. Olson, a two-time UMAC first-team selection who was also named to the All-Sportsmanship team, was part of a defense that allowed just two goals in conference play during the regular season. Joining Olson on the first team are senior goalie Sam Reed, senior midfielder Brandon Stemwedel of Grand Rapids and freshman forward Kyle Farrar. Senior midfielder Ace Amin, sophomore midfielder Joe Watt and sophomore defender Caleb Yurek were named to the second team. John Schultz of Crown College was named offensive player of the year, Stephen Ricks of Northwestern College was named rookie of the year and Northwestern’s Greg Wheaton was named coach of the year.
r Former Wisconsin-Superior and Proctor standout Jon Bell was named to the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference all-time men’s team, announced Wednesday. Bell, a defender from Proctor, played at UWS from 2008-11 and picked up five assists and five points while earning first-team All-WIAC honors in 2009 and 2010, the first two years that men’s soccer was recognized as a conference sport, and was a second-team selection this year.
