Sunday's weather: Some snow could sneak in

An occlusion will bring a slightly topsy-turvy temperature profile to the Northland Sunday, so the highest temps may be found around International Falls and the lowest in east central Minnesota and Northwestern Wisconsin. That’s why places like Aitkin, Moose Lake, Sandstone, Spooner, Hayward, Ashland and Hurley have a chance for an inch of snow on Sunday morning.

While the eastern seaboard gets slammed with 10 inches of snow this weekend, some of our towns could get a tenth of that on Sunday morning. The easterners are dealing with a Noreaster-style storm but we’re facing a much more run-of-the-mill occluded low pressure system. A low occludes when its cold front overtakes its warm front and pushes all the warm air aloft. The result is often an overcast sky with potentially steady precipitation. Our region has a 50 percent chance of that happening.

The occlusion will bring a slightly topsy-turvy temperature profile to the Northland so the highest temps may be found around International Falls and the lowest in East Central Minnesota and NW Wisconsin. That’s why places like Aitkin, Moose Lake, Sandstone, Spooner, Hayward, Ashland and Hurley have a chance for an inch of snow on Sunday morning. The rest of the region should just get rain. The rain totals should go from a tenth to maybe a quarter of an inch. Sunday’s winds should be easterly at up to 15 miles per hour.

Come Monday, the 20th anniversary of the Megastorm, trick-or-treaters should have fairly easy going. It should be partly sunny with a daytime high of 45. More rain showers are possible Tuesday and Saturday so the other days of the week should be at least partly sunny.
