On June 1, the PIGs will host their fourth annual Ride for the Vets, a motorcycle ride to raise money for local veterans' organizations. This year the PIGs are raising money for MACV-Duluth, an organization that helps homeless veterans and those suffering from chemical and alcohol dependencies and post-traumatic stress disorder.
The ride starts at the Richard Bong Veterans Historical Center next to Barker's Island. The center honors local veterans who have served our country in times of conflict. Registration begins at 10 a.m. The ride leaves at noon. Participants will finish the ride at the Log Cabin Bar with games, prizes, food and music. Cost for the event is $10 per person or $15 per couple.
All the routes have good roads through the beautiful back roads. The first stop is Uncle Bob's Bowling Alley and Roberto's Pizza in Iron River. Riders can enjoy slices of pizza at a discount price. The ride continues through Drummond to the second stop at the Decoy Inn in Solon Springs, followed by a stop at the Roadhouse Bar in Hawthorne. The ride will end at the Log Cabin Bar in Superior where there will be door prizes and food followed by live music.
Over the last three years, the Ride for the Vets has raised more than $30,000 for local veterans organizations. The funding has supported area veterans in a number of ways.
With the help of Benna Ford, the PIGs were able to purchase a van for the Douglas County Veterans Service Office. This van transports local veterans to the clinic/hospital at Fort Snelling, in the Twin Cities.
The PIGs also earmarked funding for Project New Hope, a camp where combat veterans and their families can go for education, training and skills to manage their lives after wartime service and repair family relationships.
The PIGs are not a motorcycle club. They are a group of guys who ride motorcycles and enjoy helping our community. Everyone is invited to participate in the fourth annual Ride for the Vets.
