The University of Wisconsin-Superior women’s team swept a home-and-home series from St. Benedict this weekend. The Yellowjackets won 5-1 Friday night at Dave Torrey Arena in St. Cloud, Minn., then completed the sweep with a 1-0 win Saturday night at Wessman Arena.

Haley Olmstead scored the only goal of the game at 5:41 of the first period and senior goalie Shanley Peters made 19 saves for her third shutout of the season for the Yellowjackets improved to 11-2-4 on the season.

Dory Johnson had 27 saves to lead St. Ben’s (4-9).

On Friday, Karen Larson scored two first-period goals, Olmstead, Pamela McLeod and Alison Shrift scored a goal apiece and Peters made 23 saves.

McLeod’s goal, her first of the season, gave UWS a 4-1 lead 3:31 left in the second period.

Jenna Traut made 22 saves and Emma Carlsson Sandelin scored the only goal for St. Ben’s.

UWS plays at St. Scholastica  at 7 p.m. today at Mars Lakeview Arena. 

The Yellowjackets are 4-1-1 all-time against the Saints.

Men’s Hockey

The UWS men’s hockey team was involved in a pair of shutouts this weekend.

The Yellowajckets blanked the Bethel Royals 2-0 Friday night at Bethel University Arena in Blaine, Minn., then were shutout by the St. Thomas Tommies 3-0 Saturday night in St. Paul.

On Friday, Thomas Paine’s second goal of the season came with 8:14 left in the second period, and Derek Stauber’s first goal of the year came on a power play 4:06 into the third period.

Anton Svensson, Cody Hotchkin, Jeff Forsythe and Eric Shand had an assist each as UWS improved to 5-7-2.

Goalie Drew Strandberg recorded the shutout with 12 saves.

Steven Bolton had 36 saves for Bethel (1-10-2).

On Saturday, Drew Fielding stopped 19 shots and Michael Dockery, Alex Niestrom and Tyler Gubb scored goals for the Tommies (10-2-2).

Dayn Belfour stopped 24 shots for the Yellowjackets (5-8-2).

UWS hosts UW-Stout at 7:05 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
