Winter storm warnings, advisories issued for the Northland

The National Weather Service has issued winter storm warnings and advisories for much of the Northland from tonight through Thursday night as the region may see heavy snow to start the month of May.

Snowfall in excess of 6 inches is possible for Northwestern Wisconsin, where winter storm warnings are in effect. The corridor from Hayward to Ashland appears to have the best chance of seeing the heaviest snow.

Snowfall of 3 to 6 inches is possible for Duluth, the North Shore and the Interstate 35 corridor, where winter weather advisories are in effect.

Heavy snow also is expected in the Twin Cities starting this afternoon.

There remains some uncertainty in the forecast - especially for potential snowfall in Northeastern Minnesota. Check back for weather updates today.

Superior, Bayfield, Ashland, Hayward, Grantsburg, Spooner

A winter storm warning is in effect from 7 p.m. today to 7 p.m. Thursday. Light rain today is expected to gradually mix with snow this afternoon, and switch to all snow tonight. Heavy snow is possible overnight into Thursday.

Snowfall of 6 to 12 inches is possible in the warning area.

Duluth, Cloquet, Hinckley

A winter weather advisory is in effect from 7 p.m. today to 7 p.m. Thursday. Light rain today is expected to gradually mix with snow this afternoon, and switch to all snow tonight.

Snowfall of 3 to 6 inches is possible by Thursday evening.

North Shore

A winter weather advisory is in effect from 7 p.m. today to 7 p.m. Thursday. Light rain today is expected to gradually mix with snow this afternoon, and switch to all snow tonight.

Snowfall of 3 to 6 inches is possible by Thursday evening.

Hurley, Ironwood, Phillips

A winter storm watch is in effect from this evening through Thursday evening. There is the potential for more than 6 inches of snow, but there remains uncertainty in the forecast of when rain will change over the snow.

Twin Cities

A winter storm warning is in effect from 3 p.m. today to 7 p.m. Thursday. Light rain today is expected to transition to snow this afternoon. Heavy snow is possible overnight into Thursday. Snowfall of 6 to 9 inches is possible.
